Seniors on vacation

Visit your doctor

For Seniors we always recommend you have a chat with your doctor before you head anywhere. You’ll want to consult with them about Deep Vein Thrombosis, any pre-existing medical conditions (which you will need to declare for your travel insurance), and to provide a letter for you if you will be traveling with large amounts of medication. Make sure you let them know where you’re going so they can ensure you’re properly vaccinated and aware of any potential health issues in that region.

Visit your dentist

Make a quick trip to your dentist before your trip to check that everything is ok. A filling at home in the U.S. will most likely be cheaper and more hygienic compared to most parts of the world. Your travel insurance will cover most dental expenses   while you’re traveling but you may be out of pocket initially until you can make a claim.

Be safe

As a Senior you may be more of a target for thieves and pickpockets than other travelers. It’s a good idea to take the following precautions to ensure your safety:

  • Avoid traveling around at night
  • Don’t wear expensive jewelry or accessories on obvious display
  • Wear valuables like money, your passport, or credit cards on a belt worn under the clothes and next to the skin.
  • Consider carrying a “dummy” wallet in case you’re confronted by a mugger
  • Carry the contact details of the U.S. embassy.

Packing

When you’re packing for your holiday opt for luggage with wheels if possible so that it’s easier for you to transport. Packing spare glasses is always a good idea in case yours are broken, lost or stolen - your holiday will be much more enjoyable if you can see it. Make sure you take your medication in your carry-on, even if you don’t need it on your flight, just in case you lose your luggage or your flight is delayed and you need your medicine.
