When you’ve chosen to spend the rest of your life with someone, it’s understandable that you want to pop the question somewhere special. After all, you need to have a good story to tell when every person you know hits you with ‘How did you do it?!’. Whether your idea of the perfect spot is underneath a waterfall in Iceland or on top of Africa’s highest mountain, these six places won’t guarantee you a ‘yes’, but they will ensure some beautiful pictures and an unforgettable experience.

The top of Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Ride on those feelings of success and relief, and perhaps a bit of oxygen deprivation, while popping the question on Africa’s highest peak. Not only are you guaranteed fantastic views, if you have survived a multi-day trek without breaking up, you’ve got yourself a winner. Make sure you smuggle a bottle of champagne in your pack to be cracked open at the right time. If your partner says no, it's going to be an awkward trek down so make sure you’re sure about this one.

Under a waterfall, Iceland

You will be spoilt for choice with waterfalls in Iceland. It’s just simply a matter of choosing one that you feel is fitting for your big question. Seljalandsfoss and Gullfoss are two excellent options but perhaps visit them in the off season when the viewing platforms aren’t crowded by selfie-stick wielding tourists. For bonus points, why not put together a picnic basket of Icelandic treats such as creamy Skyr (soft cheese), hot dogs and svið (sheep’s head) - okay, maybe not the last one.

Anywhere, New York

If your soon-to-be-fiancé is a movie buff, then New York might just be the proposal spot of their dreams. Channel Sleepless in Seattle and propose at the top of the Empire State Building, at a wild party on New Year’s Eve like When Harry Met Sally, or even in the flagship store of Tiffany’s & Co like in Sweet Home Alabama. If those places don’t catch your fancy, New York is full of beautiful spots like Central Park or the Rockefeller Centre - the options are endless.

The Sahara Desert, Morocco

Picture this. You’ve hopped off a camel in the middle of the red dunes. A fire sends its first sparks into the sky, and you turn to get down on one knee. Somewhere the twinkling strains of a rabab provide a perfect soundtrack to your proposal. Sounds perfect, doesn’t it? Morocco is a great spot to see the dunes and experience the beauty of the largest desert in the world. You can even pick up a rug for your new home together when you pass through Marrakesh on your way back.

On top of the Eiffel Tower, Paris

It doesn’t get more classic than getting down on one knee at the top of the Eiffel tower. There’s a reason why this landmark gets so much proposal action - it’s beautiful! A short elevator ride to the top and the entire city of Paris will open up before you. There is even a champagne bar to toast your new life together. If heights aren’t your thing, there are numerous spots around the base of the tower to ask the big question that are just as good.

The Fjords, Norway

If you and your partner are big on hiking and beautiful scenery, there is no better place to pop the question than in the sweeping beauty of Norway’s Fjords. Not only will the hiking squash your nerves, but the walk will also give you a nice burst of endorphins to make the moment extra happy. Make sure you take a tripod, or ask a kindly stranger, to take a photo that you’re not likely to top anytime soon.

Wherever you decide to propose, make sure you enjoy your big moment. After all, it’s a once in a lifetime experience. Our advice? Forget the photos, the onlookers, and even the not-so-perfect fumbling, and just enjoy the moment. The only thing you shouldn’t forget? The ring and an insurance policy to cover it.
